Why the tasks of the EUDR can only be effectively solved through collaboration and digitalisation
With the Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), the European Union has set a clear goal: to drastically reduce deforestation and the loss of global forests. Every year, around 13 million hectares of forest disappear, which corresponds to more than 10 billion trees – a number higher than the total number of trees in Germany. The regulation obliges the companies concerned to ensure that products containing, for example, wood or leather do not further exacerbate this global problem.
A company cannot accomplish this task alone, as it needs information from participants upstream in the supply chain and must in turn pass on the information it has supplemented to downstream companies. Given the enormous number of different supply chains, compliance can only be achieved in the long term through digitalisation and standardisation.
